Stretching and Growing

Ever have one of those days were you just want to scream at God – Enough!  Enough growing, enough stretching, enough being outside of your comfort zone!  If you are really showing up to Life these days are inevitable.

I have had plenty of them.  I have just passed through one recently.  The plea is for some peace and quiet for a while.  Honestly, my plea has been for some peace and quiet comfort for the rest of my life. Why does it have to be so hard?  The answer I have come to understand is it is hard because growing means stretching, shedding and movement.  Growing isn’t about life staying as it is. When we sign up to follow Jesus we can leave the notion of an unchallenged life behind.

When I finally understood that, I let go of cry for comfort, peace and make it stop. My suffering came more from my resistance than the actual challenges.  I changed my cry to hold me up, give me strength, help me persevere, let me grow in the way I am meant to grow.  If I really want to be on this journey with God then I need to let go of the notion of a “comfortable” life and cling to the knowledge of a comforted life.  Life with God is a growing life which means it will be stretching me, pushing me.  Actually when I really sit with it, I wouldn’t have it any other way.  Even though I grumble, I love what God does when I am willing to shed the old skins, to stretch myself in ways I could never have imagined before.

What I am trying to say is, life with God has different expectations.  The expectation is not one of arriving, comfort and ease.  It is one of Love, support and the ability to shine with that love, even if we don’t feel we are up to it.

Think of the You Tube videos that make us cry or inspire us. They are filled with people who show up to life even though they have every right not to.  They do that crazy, scary, and sometime just simple things and the world is blessed.  Often it is just a willingness to reach out to another or share a God given gift.  This one little act impacts thousands.  They don’t over think it they just show up. Think of all the amazing acts of love that the world is missing because we cry out "enough!".
