July “Scent” of the Month - Orange (Sweet), Citrus sinensis
July “Scent” of the Month
Orange (Sweet), Citrus sinensis
By Michelle Jereb.
Okay, I am going to be honest. July in Arizona is “joyless”. July is just the beginning of our very loooooooooong HOT summers that extend until November. Yup – that is not a typo. I meant November. It takes that long for the sizzling desert to cool down again. “Reversed” seasonal depression can occur here. We don’t have seasonal depression in the winter because our winters are when we come OUT from hiding in our air-conditioned homes and out into the open again. Ah………. I am dreaming of November…. But in the meantime how can aromatherapy help to turn Joyless July into Joyful July? Sweet Orange to the rescue!
Sweet Orange emotionally and spiritually:
- Promotes Joy!!!!
- Brings upliftment and a sense of lightheartedness.
- Increases positivity --- that is what I need to make it to November!
- Can help to reduce irritability and moodiness – summer can make me grumpy 😒
- Is calming and relaxing
Put a drop of Sweet Orange on a tissue or cotton ball anytime you need a little joy in your day. It is guaranteed to bring a smile.
Therapeutically Sweet Orange is an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, wonderful digestive aid, astringent, diuretic, immunostimulant, liver support/protector, sedative and tonic.
Sweet orange is one of the best essential oils to use for digestive disorders. It can reduce gas, constipation, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting. Emotionally it can help me not be SICK of summer!
You don’t have to be living in the desert southwest and be suffering from summer heat overload to reap the joyful benefits of Sweet Orange. No matter what you are blending – adding a drop or two of Sweet Orange will bring joy to your blend. I highly suggest it.
Essential Oil Use for this Month:
Summer barbeques can bring over indulgence in our favorite foods and a bellyache!
2 oz. “unscented” Lotion/ 2 oz. bottle
Orange (Sweet), Citrus sinensis x 5 drops
Chamomile (Roman), Chamaemelum nobile x 4 drops
Bergamot, Citrus bergamia x 5 drops
Sandalwood, Santalum album x 5 drops
Add the essential oils to your bottle. Roll the bottle in your hands to blend. Add your unscented lotion. Use a glass stirring rod or slender popsicle stick to blend. Apply the lotion to your belly as needed to aid digestion and to reduce any other discomfort. Use your lotion within 60 days. Note: With the addition of Bergamot to this blend, the blend becomes Phototoxic and can only be used under clothing if you are going to be exposed to the sun or UV light.
SAFETY: Sweet Orange is generally considered safe, but remember ALL essential oils are to be used with caution. NEVER apply any essential oil to your skin directly. ALWAYS use a carrier medium.
