The Importance of Strangers

Last week I introduced the idea of being open with strangers as a spiritual practice. Now let’s share stories. Here is mine.

When I left Graduate school as a final hurrah my daughter and I were going to Disneyland and while there we were going to visit a friend who was going to take our bird. Where we were moving to no birds were allowed. I did the research with airlines, bought a special carrier and a huge box to put the bird’s cage in and was all set.

How to Deal with Difficult Situations and Not Lose Yourself.

I am in the midst of some challenges that are creating some chaos (movement) in my life.  One is the chaos that comes with creation and will be to my benefit and the other is just the chaos that can happen in life.  As I am moving through these situations I find myself saying "Wow! This practice really works!"  I thought I’d share what I am doing in the midst of these in hopes it may inspire you in a difficult situation.

I Don't Do That!

Have you ever said “that’s not my thing” or “I just don’t do that” ? This can be a stumbling block for many who are in transition or who want to grow. Everything is going along, you're learning new skills, being stretched and challenged, and it’s all good. That is part of growth. Then comes something that you aren't familiar with and the invitation is, “NOW DO THIS.”

Are You Disaster-Proof?

My heart breaks for all the people who have been affected by the hurricanes and massive water.  As much as we like to feel in control of the world Nature can come and remind us life can change in a heartbeat.  Or we hear that war could truly be a push of a button away.  We get these same reminders when witnessing, death, illness and accidents.  The first reaction is often empathy and if there is honesty also a want to run because when life changes drastically for even one person those who witness are faced with the reality that life as they know it could also change in a heart beat.

Whose Life Are You Living?

by Amanda Petersen

I have recently been going through a remodel. My reasons for going through all this work was first to make sure what is behind the walls is up-to-date and safe, and second, to have a home that reflects who I am and is comfortable as I plan to enjoy this space for a long time. Through this 3-month process one question was asked over and over. “Are you sure? You need to think about resale value.” My response is I’m not doing this for resale and I am not doing this to live in someone else's house.  If I made decisions based on what some mythical buyer might like I have lost my purpose of a house I enjoy.

Inside Out

by Amanda Petersen

I am a big fan of living life from the inside out. Letting the core of one's soul or the spark of the Divine be the guide in everyday life. Yet as I thought about many of the homes I have been in as pastor and hospice chaplain what I noticed is often people who have had deep, meaningful inner transformation have homes that do not reflect who they are. Or they have or are doing the deep work after a transition like the death of a loved one or divorce or recovery from addiction yet their home reflects who they were, not who they are becoming.

We're Expanding

by Amanda Petersen

I am writing this at sunrise, sitting in a rocking chair on a porch in the woods listening to the birds waking up and the fish jumping in the river. I have to smile at the thought that by writing this here I am feeling all of you with me (and that is a good thing!). This is also my vacation time so I am going to make this very short and simple.

But It's Scary.

by Amanda Petersen
Growth is scary. At least most of the time. There is a desire to grow and a desire to have growth feel good and be natural. I just want to say if the process is still in one’s comfort zone it isn’t really growth. That might be classified with stretching.  Growth means going beyond the comfort zone. Stretching is coming up to the edges and getting a feel for what growth my look like.

The Discernment of Help

by Amanda Petersen

It is often thought that discernment has to do with a decision between two choices. Should I move or stay? Is this the right person for me? Is God calling me to this form of service? Or discernment is talked about around emotions. Is what I am feeling consolation or desolation? Is this a feeling of dread or excitement? What decision will bring me closer to peace and joy?

May “Scent” of the Month

Geranium, Pelargonium x asperum

By:  Michelle Jereb

What?  It is MAY already!  How did that happen?  I completely blew through April.  The Tea Tree essential oil worked so well in March for my Spring de-cluttering, I think I tossed out April and with that I didn’t write a “Scent of the Month” article.  So here we are in May :).

You Are Wrong

by Amanda Petersen

I have been noticing a lot of pain recently around being right. Contemplating this I am reminded of an idea that I was introduced to a while back - I am wrong...a lot. I thought the moon was made of cheese when I was 3. I was wrong. I thought the Berlin Wall would be up forever. I was wrong. I believed I was to be a professor of Old Testament studies. I was wrong.

Into The Woods

by Amanda Petersen

This week I would like to tell you a story inspired by Parker Palmer and the amazingly gifted women sharing at Pathways of Grace.

Imagine a creature that lives in the woods.  S/he’s very comfortable in the woods.  S/he knowsthe other creatures, plants, well worn trails and those secret paths only the “locals” know.  This creature has a good life yet something is off.  S/he’s not quite like everyone else.  The difference isn’t external it’s internal. This creature’s thoughts go to questions deeper than just where the latest food source is.  S/he questions the system that is widely accepted and yearns to explore rather than be told what to do or fit in.  This creature also yearns to have a safe place to state what is going on inside.  All the while s/he is not judging other just noticing the difference.

Chasing Fire Trucks

In case you haven't noticed Pathways of Grace has been making some changes.  When I took the leap of faith and started Pathways of Grace in my living room I had hopes to see it evolve into a center where there were others willing to gather and share their passion to create a safe space where all are welcome to listen deeply to One's life, soul, God/Divine and each other.
